Concrete is the second most used resource in the world after water. Currently there is no practical substitute for this versatile and durable product for most purposes. As the chief ingredient in concrete, cement is therefore a key requirement of modern society, but its manufacture is a resource- and energy-intensive process. That is why eco-efficiency is at the core of our business - producing more cement while using fewer resources and producing less waste and pollution per tonne. We aim to continuously improve our performance and increase our understanding of the challenges we face in moving toward environmental sustainability.
To support this commitment, we embed our corporate environmental policy in business processes to ensure continued focus and systematic performance improvement. The policy is the umbrella for all Group company environmental policies. Our network of environmental coordinators works to ensure that these are aligned and that the underlying principles are consistently applied. There are four main pillars of Holcim's environmental policy, for which we have assigned principles to guide our progress.
